Our hike to Guapulo church

To get to Quito's oldest colonial church we had to walk uphill from our apartment about 1/2 mile and then we walked down some REALLY  steep steps and down some very narrow windy streets.  The church was built in 1649.

We see a lot of art work on the streets all over Ecuador.  Some of them are very good.  You can see the cobblestones on the road.

The road to Calvary we followed to the church.

You can see how steep the road was!

A view of the front of the church.  People come from all over the world to be married here.

The conquistador!  This is the route the Spanish took to get from the coast to the Amazon jungle.

Mike in front of the church which is also a monastery.

The virgin Mary.  She is called the Lady of the Cloud because after a long drought the people said they saw her in the clouds during the rainstorm.  Quite a beautiful veil on her.  She is life size.

A baptismal font

A confessional.

The ceiling and architecture were beautiful.

More ornate architecture.

Not a very good picture of the front of the church.

On our way back up the stairs we saw a worker carrying a heavy back of cement.  Many of the homes are built on the side of the hill.  It has hard enough getting ourselves up the stairs!

Another view looking back down at the church and the valley.
